I’m back! (Plus, a big shift for Season 5 🎙️)

Happy Valentine’s Day!

It feels a bit surreal to be sending a Valentine’s greeting because—if my calendar is right—the last time you heard from me was back in November.

I’ve been "out of commission" for the past couple of months. Between heavy family commitments and a wave of illness that swept through our home, the Water Prairie podcast and IEP coaching had to take a temporary backseat. I know so many of you are in the same boat, navigating the unexpected twists of parenting and life; thank you for your grace and patience while I was away taking care of my own.

But today is February 13, and I am back in the saddle! I am thrilled to officially kick off Season 5 of the podcast this week.

🎧 Season 5: What’s New (and What’s Shifting)

Stepping back allowed me to reflect on how to serve you more effectively. This season, I’m being more intentional about where and how I share content to make it easier for you to consume:

  • The Podcast is going Audio-Only: Season 5 will be an "ears-only" experience. I want our conversations to feel intimate and accessible—something you can lean into while in the school pick-up line or doing the dishes. Listen at waterprairie.com/listen.
  • YouTube is getting a Makeover: Instead of podcast replays, our YouTube channel is becoming a dedicated hub for visual education and coaching.

What to expect on YouTube:

  • IEP Coaching: Deep dives into paperwork, rights, and the process.
  • Parent Education: Practical strategies for raising children with disabilities.
  • Inclusion Training: Resources for churches and community groups to help them become truly welcoming spaces.

🚀 Join me this week!

Season 5 officially begins today! I’m diving straight into the heart of special education advocacy and the real-life hurdles (and joys) of this journey.

Bottom Line:

I’ve missed this community. Thank you for sticking with me. Now, let’s get to work on making this the best season yet.

Check your favorite podcast app for the first episode of Season 5, and stay tuned for fresh tutorials on YouTube!

Are they just "invited to the party"? 💃 Hi friend, I talk to so many parents who feel relieved when they see their child placed in a "regular" classroom. It feels like a win, right? It feels like we’ve finally achieved inclusion. But lately, I’ve been asking myself—and the parents I coach—a harder question: Is your child actually included, or are they just sitting in the room? There is a massive difference between proximity and belonging. Too often, I see children sitting in the back of the...

Steam train traveling through a snowy forest

The 30-page surprise (and how to stop it) 🛑 I still remember the feeling of sitting down at my children’s elementary school IEP meetings. The team would slide a 30-page document across the table—stapled, dated, and looking very... finished. Sometimes they’d project it on a SMART board and read it to me, word for word. By the time we got to the end, I was exhausted. I felt like the train had already left the station, and I was just there to wave it goodbye. I had no idea back then that I had...

Happy Thanksgiving! Plus: Part 3 of My Conversation with Evan Wilkerson 🦃 Hey friend, As you read this, I hope you are taking a moment to breathe deeply, turn off the chaos, and focus on everything you have to be grateful for. From my family to yours, I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!🍂 In the midst of the holiday planning, let's remember the incredible gifts our children are—full of determination, unique challenges, and potential. That sense of determination is exactly what I explore in...
